Truthart Truth Art Susan Thomas Underwood, Native American Art Calendar

Susan Thomas Underwood,

Native American artist and author,

at home on her ranch in Oklahoma.

Susan has a genuine Natural background, as she grew up on her family ranch in N.E. Oklahoma. She now owns the ranch and operates it with her son, following the death of her first husband who was a genuine cowboy. She and her second husband, Don, own and operate Underwood Studio exhibiting and selling Susan's art across the country, and O-SI-YO Truthart Publisher, publishing Susan's books and THE CHEROKEE HERITAGE CALENDAR.

Susan previously was a member of the state-recognized Loyal Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma., a tribe that merged and federally recognized into the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma in 1870. In 2000, the Loyal Shawnee won its separation from the Cherokee and became recognized on the federal level as Shawnee.

Due to Susan's Indian father being orphaned at 6 years of age leaving gaps in her ancestry, she was determined not eligible for BIA federal membership with the Shawnee.

With provable Cherokee blood through another branch of her father's family, she joined the state-recognized Cherokee Tribe of N.E. Alabama with member-by-blood status. Research supports her Shawnee link thru the Cherokee Adoption period therefore, Susan verbally maintains her non-tribal Shawnee heritage.

EDUCATION

Susan received her B.A. degree in Art from Oklahoma State University in l972. In 1985, she received a M.L.S.(Masters Of Liberal Studies) degree with a thesis focus on art education from the University of Oklahoma.

BIOGRAPHY:

Collectors have called Susan the "Indian Philosopher" and her art style "Spiritual Realism". Each painting has a story, a philosophy which is evident with or without the words written with her art. Her art is a positive experience for the viewer, reflecting lessons Susan has learned in life and the Native American approach to spirituality.

The artist's center theme is our Creator, Mother Earth, and Her creatures: two and four legged, winged and finned, and man's place among them. She paints on many surfaces: canvas, paper, feathers, crystals, rocks and antler.

She has authored four books,

· WALK WITH SPIRIT,

· SEEKS THE TRUTH,

· ANIMALS AND THEIR WISDOM, and most recently,

· THE PHILOSOPHY OF NATIVE AMERICAN CIRCLES.
